Between the fusions you do for them and the outings on which you take them, you spend a good amount of time in Persona 5 Royal with Justine and Caroline. However, in your NG+ playthrough, not only can you befriend the twins, but you can also fight them, too.

Before they fuse into Lavenza, the fight against the two halves of the whole is grueling if you’re not ready to take them on. Their fight features a mechanic not used by other bosses in the game, so read on ahead for a little help in proving yourself to them.

The Persona series is no stranger to making you fight the attendants of the Velvet Room, and while they do end up re-fusing back into Lavenza before the end of the story, in NG+, you have the opportunity to fight Caroline and Justine. And while it was carried over from the vanilla version of the game, the fight with Justine and Caroline is inaccessible until you begin a NG+ game in Royal.
When playing a NG+ save, speak to Justine any time between 5/9 and 12/17 where she’s standing outside the Velvet Room gate, and she’ll challenge you to the fight. Come prepared with SP replenishing items, as you’ll be using a lot of SP in the fight.
However, reconsider if you’re intending to take them on immediately – even with strong NG+ Personas in Joker’s roster, the twins are intensely difficult to take down. And when you do decide it’s time to take them on, be sure to save before you begin, as victory here will be hard-earned.
Not only are Justine and Caroline both Level 99, but the twins are capable of both Baton Pass attacks and All-Out Attacks that can absolutely rip apart the party. If they manage to get your entire party on the ground, they unleash their All-Out Attack that instantly ends the fight with your defeat.
When it comes to your party build for this fight, it’s definitely best if you bring Phantom Thieves who have awakened to their second Personas. When your friends reach their max Confidant rank, they awaken to an evolved form of their original Persona, and that new Persona can evade the element their Thief is weak to. And when the twins are dealing as much damage as they will, that’s nothing to sneeze at.
When it comes to your own roster, give Joker Personas with carefully selected affinities if you have them. Anything that hits extremely hard is a great choice here offensively, as the twins have to take a set amount of damage to proceed in the fight, and it’s not anything to chance. Additionally, the girls attack in elemental phases, so having at least a spread of things to which you’re immune to can only help your chances for victory.

The Fight

Unlike other battles you’ve had so far in Persona 5 Royal, Justine and Caroline will fight you in phases. Your goal for each one is to deal enough damage to them to usher in the subsequent phase. Each phase consists of six turns, with each giving the twins different moves and elements to use against you.
You have only those six turns to lower their HP to the threshold for the next phase. Each phase is decided by what HP the twins currently have. If you hurt them enough to knock them into the next phase, the twins enter a new phase, and you have another six turns to deal with that phase next. If you haven’t dealt enough damage to lower them into the range for the next phase by the end of the six turns, however, they down your entire party and finish you off with an All-Out Attack.
On the bright side, Justine and Caroline won’t skip phases of the fight. Assuming you don’t outright defeat them before they can enter the next one, the phases are as follows:
- Phase One: Heavy physical and gun moves between 100-75 percent HP.
- Phase Two: Heavy fire, ice, electric, and wind moves (in that order) between 75-50 percent HP.*
- Phase Three: Heavy psio, nuclear, bless, and curse moves (in that order) between 100-75 percent HP.
- Phase Four: Heavy fire, ice, electric, wind, psio, nuclear, bless, and curse moves (in that order) between 75-50 percent HP.
- Phase Five: Severe physical, gun, fire, ice, electric, wind, psio, nuclear, bless, and curse moves (in that order) between 50-25 percent HP.
- Phase Six: Severe elemental or physical moves in random order between 25-0 percent HP.
*During Phase Two, one twin will heal the other with Diarahan the first time they go below 50 percent HP. Nothing you do will stop them other than defeating them before they can use it.

And although they won’t skip phases, they know how to exploit your weaknesses, and they’ll do it any chance they get. If they hit a Thief’s weakness, they typically use their One More to either Baton Pass to the other sister, so she can hit another weakness, too, or use Dekaja and Dekunda to erase your buffs and debuffs. Additionally, if they inflict a status ailment when attacking, they’re quite well-versed in exploiting it to its fullest for Technical Damage.
A good way to deal with Justine and Caroline is to let Joker use Personas that repel the attack the twins are using in their current phase. When you know what attacks are coming next, it’s easy enough to equip Joker with a Persona that repels or drains the next series of elements. Not only does repel protect Joker, but it lobs the offensive attack back at the girls, too, dealing free damage to them without you having to expend a turn. The girls are not strong against any element, so all elemental damage can hurt them evenly.
This is most critical during Phases Five and Six, when they cycle quickly through elements. They seem to be aware when one will hurt Joker the worst, so keep the order of their moves in mind during Phase Five and switch Joker’s Persona before their next turn, as they’re likely coming for him if another Thief isn’t directly weak to their next attack. Phase Six is more difficult to predict, so if you’ve got a Persona without weaknesses on Joker, Phase Six is the time to use them.
With the phases and the girls’ movesets in mind, deal the appropriate amount of damage during each phase to move onto the next one, and take them out to finish the battle. However, you must defeat both twins in the same turn. If one sister is still left standing when your turn ends when you’ve taken out the other, the one left alive will revive the other to half-HP.
The Prizes

You have a total of 50 turns to take the sisters out. If you’ve not finished the fight by the end of turn 50, they down you all and end the fight for you. However, if you defeat them before this, they give prizes that scale based on how many turns it took you to defeat them.

The girls will only fight you once per NG+ playthrough, so it's not a bad idea to save before the fight, in case it doesn't go in your favor, and you'd like another shot.
