What length artificial grass is best? ›

Pile height: artificial grass between 30 mm and 40 mm

This length is ideal if you're going for the perfect realistic look. Moreover, it will add softness to your artificial grass.

Remove the natural grass and subsoil to a depth of 10cm (if your ground is well compacted and free draining remove 7cm). Artificial grass should not be installed directly onto topsoil. Compact the surface with a roller or vibrating plate (both can be hired).

For false grass that feels realistic, be sure to buy a high quality artificial grass with a decent pile height, and use a premium infill as part of your fake grass installation. Finally, regular light maintenance of your synthetic lawn will keep your false turf feeling good.

The easiest calculation will be for square or rectangular lawns. To find out how many m² you need, measure the length and the width of your lawn in metres. When you have these dimensions, multiply them. For example, if you a 5m (w) x 5m (l) garden, you would need 25m² of artificial lawn to cover the area.

Crushed Stone/Gravel Base

A layer 1-2 inches deep provides the ideal amount of stability and drainage. The rock base allows water to easily drain through the artificial grass carpet and prevents pooling or puddling on the surface. The gravel also provides a firm, smooth foundation for the fake grass to lay on top of.

However, if the surface did not have real grass before, you may need to use MOT Type 1 because it can be compacted into a harder surface to prevent sinkage.

High quality artificial turf should have proper construction. The artificial turf should feature holed latex backing for drainage. It should come with sand, rubber, or superior non-infill surface. While optional, it may be a good idea to go with artificial grass that has padded underlay.

How often should I rake artificial grass? ›

You should rake your artificial lawn at least once per week to remove surface debris such as leaves, petals, pollen, and dust. If left to accumulate, these items could cause blockages in the drainage system and result in water logging.

Unfortunately, you can't buy fully custom-sized cuts of turf. Most of the time artificial grass is manufactured in 15 ft. wide rolls.

Roll out your artificial grass onto the clean area you wish to cover. It is best practice to leave around 50mm of grass on either side of this to trim off.

Selecting the Right Pile Height for You

Generally, artificial grass, which is designed for homes, usually sits around the 25–45mm pile height range because these have been found to offer the greatest balance of aesthetics and practicality.

The longer blade the heavier the blade will be and the more likely weight will bring it down leading to flat-look, rather than lush-look grass. Shorter piles of grass work better than longer piles in the long term for grasses.

In the summer, keep both cool-season and warm-season grasses slightly taller. Cut cool-season grasses to 3 or 3 ½ inches. Mow warm-season grasses to 2 or 2 ½ inches. In summer, grass can be kept a bit higher to prevent weeds, help shade the soil line, and maintain water in the soil.
