Are smogon tiers official? ›

We only enforce our tiers in our official tournaments, on our ladders, and in Wi-Fi battles that are arranged on Smogon. You may follow whatever tiers you like anywhere else, which includes direct challenges on Pokémon Showdown. In that case, as long as both parties agree, you may use whatever rules you want.

Usage-based Tiers

Under the most popular Smogon rulesets, Pokémon are tiered by their usage rate on the Pokémon Showdown! ladder. Pokémon in higher tiers are not legal for use in lower tiers, but Pokémon in lower tiers may be used in the tier they have been placed in or any above it.

UU (UnderUsed) is Smogon's second usage-based tier. All Pokémon that are not OU by usage and are not banned to Ubers or UUBL can be used in UU, including Pokémon from RU, NU, and PU.

The Competitive Pokemon system uses tiers to rank Pokemon based on their power and usage. The competitive tiers dictate which Pokemon can battle against others, forcing you to create teams that are roughly on an even playing field.

Terastallization remained fully legal in the SV OU metagame for the immediate future, and the generation started off with one of the most exciting opening suspects we have ever encountered. Terastallization will continue to shape our metagame in many different ways, so be sure to try it out yourself!

Smogon uses usage as the main metric to determine tiers, which is evident by the full names of the tiers: Overused, Underused, Rarely Used, and Never Used. The banlists, Ubers, BL, BL2, and BL3, serve to balance out the usage-based tiers. Ubers is the banlist for OU, BL the banlist for UU, BL2 for RU, and BL3 for NU.

E Tier is one of the seven main tiers in the game's meta. It is below D Tier and above F Tier. These builds are at a huge disadvantage when used. They are barely viable in the meta, but are good enough to not be in F tier.

What does ZU mean in Pokémon? ›

ZU stands for Zero Used, as on it gets used in zero tiers. ZU is the same thing as Untiered, and is just a metagame for Untiered pokemon.

S-Tier (superior): This is the top tier and typically represents the absolute best or most critical items. A-Tier (excellent): The A-tier is one step below S-tier.

The major difference is that Smogon uses 6v6 formats in both singles and doubles, while Battle Spot is a singles metagame where you bring six Pokemon and choose three, and VGC is a doubles metagame where you bring six Pokemon and choose four. This leads to major differences, especially in viable strategies.
