1 Tuesday, October 5, 2004 The Honolulu Advertiser POLICE BEAT Pedestrian killed by car identified A pedestrian who was hit by a car and died Thursday while trying to cross North King Street near Kamehameha IV Road near the Kalihi Shopping Center has been identified by the city medical examiner's office as Marie K. Nakao, 70, of an Umi Street address in Kalihi. Nakao was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where she died on Friday. Investigators had not determined the identity of a man who was killed Saturday morning in a collision on Farrington Highway at Mokuloa Street. It was the 48th traffic death on O'ahu this year.

Missing teenager turns up unhurt A 17-year-old girl who was reported missing Saturday after failing to show up for work at Kukui Plaza was found in Waikiki about 10 p.m. the same day. Police said the girl, who was last seen at 7:45 a.m. on Nu'uanu Avenue, was unharmed when she was found 14 hours later. Body found in parking lot HILO, Hawaii The partially decomposed body of an unidentified woman was discovered yesterday in the corner of a parking lot of Waikoloa Villas.

South Kohala patrol officers were called to the Waikoloa residential complex at 2:46 p.m. and found the body. Police have ordered an autopsy to determine a cause of death and the identity of the woman. Anyone with information about the woman's death or her identity is asked to call Detective Juergen Canda at 326- 4646, Ext. 277, or the police non-emergency number at 935- 3311.

8 families left homeles by fire A fire at the Lailani Apartments in Kailua, Hawaii, yesterday caused an $500,000 damage and left eight families homeless, police said. No one was injured in the 8:55 a.m. blaze that burned eight units at the complex on Manawalewa Street. Police said a 16-year-old girl in Building 20 woke up in a bedroom after smelling smoke. The girl then woke up her 22- year-old brother in another bedroom, and together they found the fire in a third bedroom.

The two were unable to put out the fire, and evacuated the apartment with three other children. Residents of adjoining units were also evacuated, police said. The Red Cross was helping the families find shelter. Man killed in crash identified Big Island police have identified the victim of a one-car crash in North Kohala on Saturday as Robert T. Suenaga, 41, of Kapa'au.

Police said Suenaga was driving a 1989 GMC pickup truck north on Akoni Pule Highway when the truck ran off the west side of the road and overturned one-tenth of a mile north of the 16-mile marker in Kapa'a. Suenaga was thrown from the truck. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call police officer Eric Cerezo at 961-2332. Waikiki incident results in arrest Police arrested a 37-year-old man at and Kaiulani avenues in Waikiki at 3:30 Sunday morning on suspicion of two weapons violations. Acting on a complaint, police found a man with a gun standing in the middle of the street challenging cars.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of failure to properly store a firearm and possession of an unregistered firearm. ISLAND EDITION OBITUARIES The Rev. John Engelcke, 72, Episcopal leader BY DAVID WAITE Advertiser Staff Writer The Rev. John P. Engelcke, who tended to the needs of Episcopalians in Hawaii for more than 40 years and liked to engage in debate on some of the weightiest religious issues of his time, died Sept.

23 at The Queen's Medical Center. He was 72. Engelcke arrived in Hawaii in August 1963 to become the chaplain to Episcopalian faculty and students at the University of Hawaii and the adjoining EastWest Center after graduating from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Born in San Jose, Engelcke went to public schools in Palo Alto before receiving a bachelor's degree from HarEngelcke vard and master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Engelcke said he believed the cross to be a symbol of Christianity, and said it was "nonsense" for those who wanted to save the cross to claim it was not necessarily a Christian symbol so much as a "beacon of hope for non-Christians and those with no religion." One of Engelcke's last assignments was to serve as vicar of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Malaekahana. 291-3369 ELIZABETH GLADYS HOULIHAN Born in New York City on December 19, 1910. Died in Honolulu on September 6, 2004. Survived by her only child, Daughter Karen Houlihan Mendreshora. While she resided in Chicago for many years, Gladys owned an antique store where she pursued her lifelong interest in art, artifacts and collectibles. Upon the death of her beloved husband, Thomas Houlihan in 1976, she moved to Hawaii Kai where she enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and relaxing in the Islands.

In 1993 Gladys moved to Pohai Nani where she lived for 8 happy years, enjoying her new friends and many social activities. In 2001 illness dictated that Gladys required full time nursing care and she spent the remaining years of her life in the Pohai Nani Care Center. While there she received excellent and loving care. Heartfelt thanks go to these kind people who made her final years so comfortable. Private scattering of ashes at the Outrigger Canoe Club.
