this point. cal fire issuing evacuation orders and warnings for local residents. hello, everybody. thank you for joining us tonight. i'm catherine heenan and we begin with that breaking news from sonoma county. a wind driven brush fire has now burned 1013 acres. this is in the area of stewarts point skaggs spring road near lake sonoma. at last word, cal fire telling us it's about 15% contained. earlier today, plumes of smoke could be seen for miles as this fire grew. the current evacuation orders at last word cover fall creek road to stewarts point skaggs spring road and evacuation warning also in place west of dry creek road. there is an evacuation center now it's laguna high school in forest hill. and tonight we're joined by cal fire spokesperson jason clay. jason, over the course of the day, i was telling people 300 and some acres, 50900. so now

more than 1000 out. what's happening? what are the conditions? >> yeah, where you kind of mentioned at the start, there is really a wind-driven fire with low relative humidities. and so the led to the fire spread we threw a lot of resources that the fire both from the air and the but but this fire has grown into that where we got to just not now. what about just over 1000 acres in rapid percent contained. >> okay. do you did say 15, 1, 5, correct. that number hasn't changed in a long time. >> you're right that when we first that have come out and announce that the 10%, you know, i was in the mid afternoon park wrote fire, started about 12, 30 property about that sometime the 2 o'clock range. and from point on the win really picked up and started to drive out fire the geographic port. you look at record now on which is a

little bit to to the south lake sonoma. fire had kind of >> over that mount. it was going bring in downslope into this out. and so i really grew well with brand's and when i was driving down. >> so jason, people will, of course, want to know about houses. i know, know at last word and we no injuries reported. but what about homes that are threatened? what's happening there? >> yeah. so we don't have any reports of injuries which is but we have confirmed that we have had some structures, the we are working through our damage inspection process to kind of tabulate the type of those structures and the numbers. so we don't haue that exact number yet, but we some structures in this and win. as you were talking about the acres that were increasing a during that time really shifted our tactics to structure the fence. so we're shipping a lot of resources down to west dry creek grill, the defendant, one of those structures there.

the west of healdsburg and cloverdale in northern sonoma county. lot of rolling hills fires burning predominantly and brush. so they are brush was a big deal type that is wrong through when you get to that downslope aspect with the wind behind it, that fire can move. and that's what we saw a little bit helps. little bit here today. >> so i i read somewhere and one point today, people were being told basically stay calm, but get out of there quickly, did evacuations go smooth flight? >> yeah. far as we specially that we don't have any reports of for firefighters or are civilians, you know, up to this point. so that's a good reminder for people to stay tuned in. are you signed up to receive emergency alerts from your have you talked to your family about your evacuation plan and how get your go bag so this every time we're trying to more fires. fire activity is picking up all throughout california are way more so than seen by this point last year. so if you're

>> after airdrop fighting a wildfire helps when you have lake sonoma right next door between air and ground resources, we're working really hard to try fortify daca to mind that we do have cal fire's. jason clay says they responded to the fire around 2.30 on sunday. >> a mix of high winds, low humidity, the fire balloon from a couple acres to hundreds. yeah, we we throw in a very strong response at you know, dynamic situation here. also wind gusts bringing the smoke as south to santa rosa. >> so this is a little demonstration of how quickly these fires can spread with these high winds. what started as a small little smoking spark? >> actually turned into a couple flames having calfire here take out the top spot. it's one of the many hot spots caused by the wind making it challenging for firefighters. it ended up destroying an unknown number of structures here next to sonoma lake. the smoke is just overwhelming. the time dozens of cars pulled over watching. >> and waiting to see if the fire will spread their way like jeff and megan. i hold who came here with their

hot spots, making sure this fire doesn't continue to spread any further reporting in sonoma county. jack moment. kron 4 news. >> all right. let's a take a look at weather conditions. kron four's gayle ong. this is this was the scene as this fire was just getting started today, gayle. and as we know and talking to cal fire, this thing really did take off. >> it's breezy out there. it's been a breezy day and of also the dry fuel. so ed, but just the sacramento area and parts of napa county are actually under a red-flag warning. sonoma county is not part of that criteria, but it just shows with those conditions, anything could spark. and you can see that here. the point fire and also the topography. we saw some of that. those pictures and images and jack story. it's surrounded by dry hills and those trees. and i know there are several homes and vineyards in that area which is west of geyserville in sonoma county, near lake sonoma right there. so let's take a look at the wind speeds 13 miles per hour in santa

rosa at this 10:00pm hours. so the winds have which is great news for cal fire and firefighters with the fire. a little closer look at the conditions near where the point fire is. healdsburg is reporting 3 miles per hour. wind speeds and windsor 9 miles per hour. so single digits at little closer there. but, yoa know, as you make your way up, hill, it is a bit breezy. so it will still remain breezy overnight. relative humidity will be bouncing back to close. 50%. so this is monday morning. now, 38% relative humidity in sonoma counties. you can see in santa rosa. but as i take you through the afternoon when that daytime heating comes up, we have some critical fire weather here. 8% relative humidity. so it is down to the single digits that's very concerning. you can also see parts of napa county and congress any on-field there down to the single digits as well as that is where that red flag warning is. and napa county, our interior mountains. and this is really for the greater sacramento

>> a fastmoving wind driven fire fueled by hot temperatures moved through northern la county saturday afternoon. i felt like you open up of and it's like 250 degrees right there. it likely started in the brush by this mcdonald's off the 5 freeway in gorman. alex snover works at the 76 gas station across the street. he ran over to help evacuate customers inside. they were pretty frantic. yeah. i get your car out here. get your car here. everybody's trying to pull out some people most back into each other. >> the fire spread to this nearby auto body shop completely destroying all of the cars on the lot and left behind charred remains. >> hungry valley campgrounds and the area around corpsman school was evacuated. >> california state parks. they have there officers up. they're evacuating people out to make sure they get to a place of safety. don't get caught by this fire. 1200 people in total were told to leave for safer ground. they

came out right to our driveway. and all firefighters got there and started hosing everything down. bret edwards and his family were among those who loaded up their animals onto a trailer and got out of there and started a lot of spot fires. and that's all i was trying to put those out. >> and the firefighters were like a just get out of here. >> throughout the day, the fire hopped from hillside to hillside and gained momentum burning more than 3600 acres. >> it's very easy with just the light flashy fuels that we have here along with these high winds. very easy for a small fire to become very large at a very rapid rate. many onlookers captured the billowing smoke from parts of the 5 freeway. longtime gorman residents say there are fires here every summer. >> but nothing quite like this. >> now for a look at the 4 zone forecast look at the same. we have, of course, been talking a lot about wildfires today. this was the scene earlier at the point fire in sonoma county. this is

continues to be significant problem tonight, a kron four's gayle on this year. she's also talking about air quality and it can see gayle, why that would be a problem. >> yeah, we have some strong onshore flow. so the winds are blowing east and notice said that a pod feet were in. that's right by lake sonoma. sounds good with the water drops. but, you know, there's homes in vineyards in that area. so air quality is factor here. the air district did issue a spare. the air alert from now until tomorrow. you can even see at this 10:00pm hour. we have oakland, one point a vacaville it. so oakland back right now are under moderate air quality. but at one point we saw some parts of moderate air quality in mill valley and avato. so just be mindful of that. if you are sensitive to that as the fire is blowing east. and here is here are those wind speeds so you can see the direction. it's onshore flow here has a northerly component to it. santa rosa is gusting at 29 miles per hour. so that

is pretty breezy still. we will remain breezy along the coast and in the higher elevation throughout the winds should ease just a little bit and then they will be picking back up again in the afternoon and mix this with the dry conditions. last check, a relative humidity will be down to the single digits in sonoma and napa counties tomorrow afternoon. so with the breezy conditions out, make things challenging for firefighters. so just be mindful of tuesday. looks like we'll see a pop in the winds in the afternoon as well. so that has been the weather story. we've been breezy. we are under red flag warning in the greater sacramento area and parts of the north bay mountains and napa county and solano county lake county. so sonoma county where that point fire is very close by where the red flag warning is. a live look here at the east you know, the satellite was showing some drive smoke making its way to the east bay as well as that white oakland has some moderate air quality right now. overnight lows tomorrow. we'll be starting off your

affected by a fire today in san francisco. that was on the 800 block kearney and columbus at sterne school. this is in the financial district. firefighters say at times not telling us a lot about what happened, but they say that at times the fire was between the walls of the buildings, which is never good. this is video from the citizen app but no injuries were reported. apparently the damage was not 2 serious. no one is displaced tonight. the school was not in session. firefighters say the cause of the fire seems to be accidental. stanford university graduates organized a mass walkout at today's graduation ceremony. it was a protest of the war in gaza kron. 4 viewer sent us some video from the commencement. again. this was and everybody. but the organization, stanford for palestine hosted a protest calling this the people's commencement them a significant number students did walkout students demanding

the university divest from companies that help fund israel. it is, of course, the latest in the string of protests that have broken out on stanford's campus since october. 7th. in the east police shooting sent a suspected carjacker to a hospital in fremont. officers responded to a carjacking in a walmart parking lot on osgood road today. they stopped a man who matched the description of the thief on auto mall parkway. police say he was holding a knife when one of the officers shot him. >> immediately upon being hit, the officers rendered first aid to the individual. he was subsequently transported to an area hospital to receive medical treatment. and he is currently there. we believed him to be in stable condition. >> and investigation police say is continuing. >> kron 4 is your local election headquarters and

congress jack molmud is in sonoma county. he's been there all day getting the latest information. he's joining us by phone. hey, jack, when i talk to cal fire, what really struck me was he saying, yeah, there are buildings that are gone and that was kind of knew. do we know any more about that? >> so i looking at my map for both the day some of these roads were just so hard. the act that you did, the closures saw really mo. i mean, if you're you know, the county seeing the smoke all the way down south and a road that just really difficult keep >> looking at map on my screen, i was able to see that the west dry creek road. when we do talk about structures like what does that mean? it's hard to pinpoint exactly. but what i do from the map, our home and there may also be some facility that have to do with the snow, the lake reservoir, but definitely a really risky situation for anybody who's living there. and that's why they put that evacuation notice there. and as you mentioned earlier, more

than 1000 acres burned now and still only at that 15 percent, mark even back. and we're just about 200 acres. we're still at that 15% contained this is really difficult fire to battle. i'm told because of the high wind, really, really low humidity. and even just to send a lot of the footage that i thought earlier back to the kron 4 newsroom. i went down to help bird. i can get cellular signal some that the fact you could just hear the helicopters in the cal helicopter. it. >> do you think about my head? helberg always the mountains and so cal fire told me earlier, which is now the truth of the matter. now at 10, 32 in evening there still very much working at fire. they say they'll also be there for the next couple of days. again, to that 15% contained. marxist struggling to get past that as as the sacred just keeps growing. as you mentioned. >> so, jack, i know they're reluctant to talk about houses or businesses gone until they really have been able to get

look at the forecast. again, we're looking at the scene from when they point fire was getting underway today. >> kron four's gayle ong is here with the latest. yeah, kathryn and some of that trip smoke is showing up on the satellite. i have a view right here. >> on the future smoke cast. we can show you just based on the direction of the winds. this is showing us. it is has a northwesterly flow. so you can see it's moving south east throughout monday and we have another round of gusty conditions monday as well. with that the air district did issue a spare the air alert. we're under that right now. and that is going on until tomorrow. so that means no wood burning. and even at this 10:30pm, mark, we could see pockets of moderate air quality in oakland in vacaville, just from that wind blowing, possibly blowing that and that direction. so here are the future wind, as you know, pretty as jack described, pretty breezy. so this is one 45 monday morning.

29 miles per hour expected in santa rosa. so that's close to the ballpark or where point fire is in sonoma county, calistoga. 23 miles per hour. so notice the coast and the mount north bay mountains are getting the brunt of that wind. it eases a little bit monday morning, but then the late afternoon it kicks up again. and i did check the relative humidity forecast. we are expected to see the single digits tomorrow afternoon's that is very concerning for firefighters. and we want to show you the fire weather model while we're at it. this indicates this where we are at risk. so right now, we don't see a lot of risk. a risk is minimal. but as i take you through monday morning, you start to see that yellow pop-up on the map that's close santa rosa. but take a look at the late afternoon. we start to see that risk pop-up, even parts of bay area pleasanton san jose and pittsburgh and

the greater sacramento area, which is under a red flag warning. so parts of the north bay are under red flag warning as well. so we will be continuing to monitor the conditions. meantime, here is a tenant 10 out what we will be warming up. thursday marks the first day of summer. it's going to feel like it for you inland. and we've had a few a 90 degree weather days. so we're we're seeing that back in the forecast for the bay will be noticeably cooler in the 60's and 50's around the coast. when i come back, we'll tracking the fire and the smoke conditions. catherine, thank you, gayle and more fire talk because a big fire has been burning in south sacramento. it is threatening homes, closing roads. >> broke out just before noon today. the jackson fires burned at least 900 acres. kimberly cruz reports. >> flames quickly scorched through hundreds of acres. really the the predominant amount of fire was from excelsior all the way to sunrise along that jackson

corridor. i saw the smoke before the fire truck treatment out there and that smoke was just unreal. and then the >> wind kept switching rougned the fires threatening multiple homes and livestock in the area, damaging several outbuildings. pretty much worse case scenario for this area. and this is what we preach. we've got this dense vegetation is primed to burn residents in the areas the flames just feet away from their homes. neighbor and i both saw the flames and again, there's nothing you can do about it. and you just keep hoping that the wind is going to take it away from your place. the firefight coming from the ground. and the skies with multiple air strike teams from different counties coming in to help metro fire and a number of agencies here locally. we're actually heading down to a fire. the post incident. >> down in la and actually diverted and came back to fight this fire. and it's good thing they did that showed up just in time because that fire was pushing towards sunrise with the area under a red flag warning.
